“I am not an Athenian or a Greek, but I am a citizen of the world “SOCRATES”
Distinguished guests, Dear Members of the Community, Ladies & Gentleman.
Our community wishes to thank all our members for their support and encouragement showed to this committee in the running of our community ‘s affairs.
Despite our diminishing numbers , our community has maintained the religious requirements of the Hellenic Orthodox persuasion and promoted and encouraged cultural, social and educational activities.
Through our two Hellenic Orthodox Churches, namely the Holy Nativity of Theotokou , situated at 1 Bardia Street , Duncanville, Vereeniging, Province of
Gauteng , and the St Nektarios Church situated at 9a President Boshoff Street, Vanderbijlpark , SE 1, Province of Gauteng, our Hellenic Orthodox tradition has grown through the spiritual guidance of our priest Archimandrite Sergios (Yaremtso) thereby ensuring the faithful a blessed and prosperous spiritual life dedicated to the teachings of our Hellenic Orthodox Church.
Despite turbulent times in Greece, our community, through the Educational Department of the Hellenic Republic has been in the fortunate position of having acquired the services of our teacher Mr. Dimostenis Axios who, with his assistance of his, wife Mrs . Anna Axiou, have provided our community’s children, with an educational environment whereby the Greek language can be taught in line, with modern educational traditions. Our children, through the guidance of their educators, have through the year provide our community with cultural entertainment by perfor1ning plays, reciting poems on Greek National Days and by singing Christmas carols. In doing so the children have entrenched such traditions which have been followed by Hellenes through the ages. Our school through the hard work of Mr. Axios can only grow and in doing so ensure that future Hellenic generations can communicate proudly in Greek, when the need arises.
Our community through its advancement of Hellenic ideals and traditions in an ever evolving culturally changing South African plane ensures that the founders of our community’s vision to maintain the Hellenic culture in the Vaal Triangle, is met. Our committee consists of first generation Hellenes who through growing up in South Africa, understand the need to keep our cultural heritage for future generations. Our ladies committee, through their loyal assistance to our committee, ensures the smooth running of the various functions that we hold throughout the year.
We wish to thank each and every Hellene for all the assistance we have received in our fund raising efforts which ensures the survival of our community. We thank those sponsors that are present tonight at our annual dance for their kind donations.
Our committee wishes you all a pleasant evening with us. May your daily lives further be filled with love, prosperity and most of all happiness within the family.
